Community

Copperton Wind Farm is committed to the empowerment and upliftment of disadvantaged local communities within the Siyathemba Municipality. Employment and business opportunities during the construction phase are available for locals from Prieska, Marydale and Niekerkshoop. During operations, the Community itself, through a Community Trust with a 5% shareholding in the project, will manage the socio-economic development projects best suited for the area.

Environment

Copperton Wind Farm stands as tall as its mighty turbines for responsible environmental stewardship. Each year of wind energy generation is expected to save 38,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and 2.5 million litres of water compared to coal-fired generation.

The Project

Copperton Wind Farm, with 34 Acciona 3.15 MW turbines, will collectively supply 102 MW to the national grid. 375 GWh of clean green energy is expected to be generated annually for 20 years of operation.

About Copperton Wind Farm

Copperton Wind Farm is a renewable energy project situated in the heart of the Siyathemba Municipality of the Northern Province. The project is located nearby Copperton town, approximately 290 km from Kimberly and is committed to the socio-economic development of surrounding communities.

The project was selected as a preferred bidder in round 4 of the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. The government led programme has procured 6,283 MW of wind and solar power capacity, amounting to R202 billion investment and 34,841 job years since 2011. Wind power is expected to play a significant role in South Africa’s energy future moving forward.
